An update on the 2011 Defending World Champions

What else can I say about the Cardinals season thus far? After seeing a free-agency slugfest that saw Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols both leave the National League, they added veteran outfielder Carlos Beltran. Adding Beltran to a line-up that already has World Series MVP David Freese, Yadier Molina, and Matt Holliday to it just made the team chemistry even deeper--and better.

Injuries plagued the Cardinals during the early months of the season. Chris Carpenter never threw a pitch in Spring Training due to a bulging disc in his neck and now is out for the season after having surgery. Lefty Jaime Garcia went down with a shoulder injury and is said to be almost ready for a rehab assignment that could have him back with the club around mid-August or early September. Matt Carpenter, Jon Jay, and Lance Berkman also missed time to various injuries. Now that the Cardinals have their bats back in the line-up, their offense has clicked on all cylinders.  Lance Berkman left the Cardinals game Tuesday after being hit by a Clayton Kershaw breaking ball. Berkman is day-to-day. The latest injury news is that David Freese left yesterday’s game against the Dodgers in the 6th inning due to right calf cramps. Freese and Berkman are both expected to play in the Cubs series starting tonight.

The bullpen has been a bit of a problem for the Cardinals in the past years—and moreso so far this season. In the offseason, they added lefty J.C. Romero and righty Scott Linebrink.  However after struggling during the beginning of the season, which led to Romero being released. Injuries prevented Linebrink from joining the Cardinals bullpen. The Cardinals recalled 2 young relievers in Trevor Rosenthal and Barrett Browning to help solidify the bullpen. They’ve also added veteran lefty Brian Fuentes after he was released by the Athletics after posting a 6.84 E.R.A. for them. Matheny said he’ll use Fuentes as a lefty specialist, which could be a good move that will hopefully pay big dividends for this Cardinals current squad.

Going into today’s game against the Chicago Cubs, the Cardinals come off a seven game homestand, including a 6-1 result, sweeping the Cubbies and taking 3 of 4 from the newly improved Dodgers that got both the likes of Matt Kemp and Andre Either added back into there potent lineup. This series could make or break what the Cardinals do at the deadline. As we all know, general manager John Mozeliak isn’t a stranger to deadline deals. The Cardinals this season are 7-4 against their NL Central division-foes, and this afternoon should be a good match-up in favor of St. Louis with Lance Lynn on the mound.
